Introducing the Second Talk

Introducing the Second Talk

When I was eight, my friends and I discovered the book, "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret." With that I discovered I had so many questions. Questions my mother was not expecting yet.

are you there, God?

Words like...

Period
No, it doesn't just mean the dot at the end of the sentence or as my Aussie acting teacher screamed, "Full Stop." (R.I.P. Kevin Jackson. You were brilliant!)

Pad
Again, not just something lying on a bed or couch and why does it need a belt?

And phrases, like, "we must, we must, we must increase our bust!' (That one still runs in my head!)

The First Talk

So after, she pulled herself together and off the parlor couch, she came upstairs and explained way more than I wanted to know about bleeding and pads that no longer needed belts. Well, I think you know where I am going with this.

The point is I got a talk.
That year I also got an even more interesting talk when I came off the school bus and asked my what the "f-word" means. No, literally, the "f-word", not the f*@k word, but I shall save that for another post.

But, What About the Other Talk

So, most women recognize this story in some awkward form or another. We were given some form of insight into what was coming as we entered the awakenings of those floating ovals in our sanctums. It came from a parental, sisterly, or even school figure in our life.

Now that the walls to those sacred ovum have been breeched and soon the white flag will wave, who's talking?

No one, that's who.

Nobody's mama is sitting them down and giving them the real low down. As a rule, even our doctors aren't educating us about when and what to expect. Frankly, we are left to memes and and ancient platitudes about crazed women pouring ice down their blouses or living like the Golden Girls. No shame to those fab women but I thought they were in the their 60s. I now realize I am older now than their characters.

So, who's up for changing the narrative?

Me.

I am going to be talking with friends and hopefully, experts, and start educating myself about this new chapter. I am not dried up, but yes, ladies, it is HOT in here.

I hope you will join me and drop me a line if you want to join the discussion.
