Women Learn to Surf: How Traci Got Her Boogie Back

Women Learn to Surf: How Traci Got Her Boogie Back

At the top of 2019, I was filled with vim and vigor, ready to take on the world. I chose Courage as my word. I created a calendar. I bought many colored pens. I was pumped.

Halfway through the year & I'm boogied out

Fast forward six months, and I find myself at a loss. I could explain why life got ahead of me - surprise homeschooling, chronic illness flares, family issues - but really, it doesn’t matter. (If you are hearing Bohemian Rhapsody in your head now, you’re welcome). What matters is that I need to get my groove back. All apologies to Terry McMillan. And now I gave you Nirvana. You are guaranteed a wonderful day of earworm-ing.

My family and I were invited on a sponsored trip to Schlitterbahn Galveston. All opinions are mine. It is my Universe, after all.

Back to my flailing 2019. Because of great friends and a great company, Texas Travel Talk, I got an opportunity to join Schlitterbahn Waterparks in celebrating National Women Learn to Surf Day.

I needed something to throw me out of my comfort zone. And nothing throws you more than crashing water.

To my surprise, Schlitterbahn has full boogie board experiences in all four of its Texas parks. And on this day, they brought in professional surfers and boogie-ers to give us the low-down, Boogie-ers or boogie boarders? Oh well, people who know how to rock a boogie board.

Time to Boogie

So to Schlitterbahn Galveston, I went and headed straight to BoogieBahn. (Cute name, huh?) And while I waited my turn, I had the greatest opportunity to talk with other women with similar dreams and desires and a similar need to turn the emotional page.

And here’s what happened.

Several times. But rather than feeling like I was failing, I was laughing. I even took a bow. Remember, I am an actress, I can’t resist an audience.

I got some coaching, and I got a little better.

And then I got a lot better.

And I did this!

Here's how I got my boogie back...

I was actually amazed by myself. I don’t know if I have ever said that before. And no, I am not ready to zip up a wetsuit and head out to Mavericks, but I just did something hard. Really hard. I feel really proud and ready to conquer other hard things.

From Courage to Confidence

So, hey 2019, let’s boogie. I’m ready now.

Have you ever surfed? What hard thing have you done?
Did it give you confidence?

A big thank you to Schlitterbahn and Texas Travel Talk for making this happen.

This looks like such a super fun adventure! I would love to try something like this!

Oh gosh I would love to learn to surf one day!! I am too much of a chicken right now!!

I hope you do it someday!:)Traci

I think this would definitely be an awesome experience! I'm pretty sure my kids would be great at it, but not so sure about me. Ha ha!

Oh, you should try it. I did not fare well at first but I got better over time and I was so proud of myself!:)Traci

That looks like a lot of fun. I have always wanted to try to do this. I'm afraid I'd keep falling though haha.

I won't lie - there is a lot of falling involved but that's why it's nice to do it in such a safe and supportive environment.:)Traci

I would love to surf...with a huge life vest on which probably wouldn't help. I don't feel that I am strong enough of a swimmer.

In the ocean, you would definitely need to grow as a swimmer. What was awesome about this is that the water was only a couple of inches deep - just enough to move you forward so you could definitely try this out, even without the jacket!:)Traci

I'd love to learn how to surf but I am scared. haha! You are awesome for trying and learning.

I was scared. too - believe me. I made my word for the year "COurage" and this was definitely a day of it!:)Traci

I have never tried but would love to try at least once. It does look difficult, but worth the try, I guess summer should be my time to try

Go for it! I am really glad I did,:)Traci

Until recently I thought the only way to learn to surf was in the ocean. I'd be much more comfortable trying it in a controlled environment like this. I'm glad you had fun!

Same for me! I would never have known such a thing was available but it really helped me gain some confidence!:)Traci

I have never surfed but I would love to try this out. What a cool way to get out in the water and get a workout. I would love it!

It is a lot of work! Every muscle hurt the next day - LOL!:)Traci

This looks like such a fun experience. I would love to learn how to surf.

It was a truly awesome experience!:)Traci

I've always wanted to learn how to surf! That looks like so much fun and you don't have to worry about getting shark bitten!

Yep! No shark bites! LOL:)Traci

How fun! I would certainly try this out, but I bet I would fall a ton. I am so clumsy. My daughter would do so much better!

I fell a lot, too. It's okay to fall!:)Traci

How cool is this though?! What a fun adventure and looks like a great challenge to take on too!

It was a great workout, definitely!:)Traci
