Get a Chill Gig

Okay, I shall be honest. The last couple of weeks have been a lot.

I mean a LOT.

But stressing doesn’t do any of us any good, so I found some tips to help, because we all know that this continuous overwhelm can have a detrimental impact on our health. And if we’re tense all the time, then we aren’t living the life we want.

It is my Universe, after all.

So what should we do?

Take a chill pill?

NO!

Get a chill gig!

What?

Get a hobby.

Like music…

It doesn’t matter whether you are listening to music or even trying to play an instrument because music is truly a wonderful way for you to relieve stress. And a crazy good outlet as well. It supports both physical health and emotional well-being. And no, you really don’t have to be a professional musician, just have fun.

Download your internal Eddie Vedder or Mick Jagger. Or go the way of Lizzo with a flute! Whatever floats your musical boat

Head into the Kitchen

I cooked something!

Try your Hand at Cooking. I am notoriously bad at cooking, but I have found some fun in that side of the house. If you have never cooked before, then it is wise for you to start out with something simple. This cheesecake recipe from Preppy Kitchen is a fantastic starting point. You can also experiment with different herbs and spices to see what works and what doesn’t. The great thing about cooking is that the only limit is your imagination, and that it is entirely possible to host a family if you feel proficient enough. I tried turkey this past Thanksgiving and everyone lived!

Dinner parties also help you to be more social, which helps to relieve stress. A little wine around the table isn’t a bad idea either. Just sayin’!

Gardening

My latest endeavor is trying to grow things and keep them alive. There isn’t much more relaxing than being able to sit in the sun. I am growing my own flowers, and I plan to try some herbs. I must say that I have found gardening a good way to eliminate stress.

You can do it, too!

If you don’t have a lot of outdoor space, try indoor gardening. Just buy a few pots or small garden beds to grow your favorite produce or herbs. Remember you’ll need to plant according to the season, and that you will also have to take into account the sun's placement during set times of the day. Also, take note of any interactions with pets if you have them.

Become a Star Watcher

Well, not literally, but if you enjoy watching movies, then why not become a movie buff? There’s a whole memorabilia world out there from movies. I have several collectibles from my favorite actress, Marilyn Monroe, and a couple of classic films. And there is a good deal of fun to be learned from taking the time to study directors and film scores. When you do this, you look at the big screen totally differently, with a new respect and love. I don’t know about you, but that adds something to the experience and takes my mind off the things that were stressing me out.

P.S. Looking at the real stars is quite a chill activity, as well.

Just Do Something

It’s not quite Nike, but you get the point. Choosing a hobby allows us to get our minds off ourselves and onto something enjoyable. It places our energy into a positive space, and we reap the rewards, sometimes with an actual reward like when we garden or make art or even knit, or sometimes, just a feeling. Either way, we win!

So, tell me. Do you have a hobby?
What do you do when things get too tough?

Those gigs are great ways to chill, for sure. Listening to music and singing along if I know the song is very relaxing for me. Gardening too.
